About the Role
The Museum of the Order of St John is looking for an experienced Archivist to appraise, sort, catalogue and make accessible the extensive 19th and 20th century organisational archive of the Order of St John and St John Ambulance. The archive consists of official and unofficial documents, diaries, ephemera, oral histories, photographs and audio-visual material. This is a new role for the organisation (historically the archive has fallen within the Museum curator’s remit). Significant progress has been made in recent years through discrete project-based cataloguing initiatives and through commissioning external specialist advice. Building on these foundations, the role will be responsible for developing and implementing new policies, procedures and creating a cataloguing hierarchy from scratch. Working closely with the Head of Collections and curatorial and learning colleagues, the successful candidate will transform the management of the archive, ensuring both its long-term preservation and realising its potential to inform and inspire audiences. Longer-term, the Archivist will be responsible for identifying gaps and developing the collection. Volunteers will play a vital part in delivering the strategy, working under the guidance and direction of the Archivist.
You will be a highly-motivated Archive and Records Management professional, passionate about widening access and engagement with historic archives. As part of a small team, you will be required to be both hands-on and strategic, working closely and collaboratively with museum colleagues. With superb project management skills, this is an ideal opportunity for someone looking to shape and develop a new archives service. Experience of leading and inspiring volunteers is essential.

You will receive:
- Competitive salary & pension scheme
- Cycle to work scheme
- Health and Wellbeing portal – access to financial, health and wellbeing support and an Employee Assistance Programme
- Discounts – you’ll have access to Blue Light and NHS Discounts as well as discounts on mobile phones, gym memberships, cinema tickets, restaurants, holidays and shopping.
