ABOUT THE ROLE
An Asbestos Operative safely removes, repairs, or encapsulates asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) in commercial, industrial, or residential buildings, often prior to demolition or refurbishment. Key duties include constructing containment areas, using specialized equipment, adhering to strict Health and Safety Executive (HSE) regulations, wearing protective clothing/respirators, and decontaminating.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Removal and Remediation: Safely removing or repairing asbestos (e.g., ceiling tiles, pipe lagging, insulation boards).
- Site Preparation: Building, cleaning, and maintaining containment enclosures (tenting) to prevent fiber release.
- Safety Compliance: Strict adherence to method statements, risk assessments, and legal regulations, including the use of decontamination units.
- PPE Usage: Wearing and maintaining respiratory protective equipment (RPE) and personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Waste Disposal: Packaging and disposing of asbestos waste in accordance with environmental regulations.
- Equipment Maintenance: Using specialized equipment like airless sprayers and keeping tools in working order.
CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS
Qualifications, Knowledge & skills:
- Training: Usually requires an Asbestos Removal Operative training certificate (e.g., ARCA or equivalent).
- Fitness: Must be physically fit and, due to the need for masks, clean-shaven.
- Licence: A full driving licence is often required.
- Skills: Ability to work in confined spaces and at heights.
- Checks: Often requires a medical check and face-fit tests for respiratory equipment.
