ABOUT THE ROLE
A Carpentry and Joinery apprenticeship providing practical on‐the‐job training and off‐job college learning. The apprentice will work with the Building Services team to assist with installation, maintenance and repair of timber structures, fixtures and fittings across council properties and housing stock, learning safe working practices, joinery techniques, site carpentry and compliance with industry standards.
MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist qualified carpenters and joiners with installation, maintenance and repair of timber structures, doors, windows, staircases, skirting, and internal/external joinery.
- Measure, mark out and cut materials to size using hand and power tools under supervision.
- Assemble and install fixtures and fittings, including door frames, window frames, stair components and bespoke joinery under supervision.
- Carry out basic fault finding and repairs to timber elements and finishes under supervision.
- Support planned maintenance and reactive repair work across council sites.
- Follow safe systems of work, risk assessments and permit-to-work procedures; use PPE and appropriate tools.
- Keep accurate records of work carried out, materials used and time on site.
- Attend college/learning provider sessions and complete apprenticeship portfolio and assessments.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues, tenants and contractors, maintaining professional standards and good customer service.
CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS
Experience & Qualifications
- GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Maths at grade 4/C or above preferred.
- Willingness to enrol on and complete a Level 3 Carpentry and Joinery Apprenticeship (City & Guilds / NVQ or equivalent).
- Basic CSCS or willingness to obtain one at start of employment (desirable).
Essential Skills
- Skills: Basic hand tool and power tool use; ability to follow technical drawings and instructions; good numeracy and literacy; accurate measuring and marking out skills.
- Experience: Some practical experience desirable (work placement, college workshop, DIY, or similar) but not essential, training will be provided.
- Knowledge: A basic understanding of timber properties, joinery techniques and site safety; willingness to learn industry standards and regulations.
- Other: Good communication and customer service skills; reliable, punctual and able to work as part of a team; willingness to work at heights and in confined spaces where required.
