ABOUT THE ROLE

Hackney Council is looking for a passionate and proactive Recycling Assistant to join our Recycling Team and support key waste reduction and sustainability initiatives across the borough.

This is an exciting opportunity to play a vital role in delivering Hackney’s Climate Action Plan while working directly with local communities to improve recycling services and reduce environmental impact.

As a Recycling Assistant, you will support the Recycling Officer in delivering frontline recycling and waste services across approximately 60,000 estate households.

This is a varied, hands-on role with plenty of time spent out in the borough engaging with residents and monitoring services.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE ROLE

  • Supporting recycling and waste minimisation initiatives across estates and kerbside services.
  • Acting as a key contact for resident enquiries and resolving customer queries.
  • Monitoring recycling performance and carrying out site/property assessments.
  • Assisting with the delivery of projects, campaigns, and community engagement events.
  • Promoting recycling schemes and encouraging participation across diverse communities.
  • Collecting, analysing, and maintaining data on recycling performance.
  • Providing administrative support, including reports, correspondence, and spreadsheets.
  • Working collaboratively with internal teams, contractors, and community groups.

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS

  • Passionate about environmental sustainability and recycling.
  • Confident communicators with strong customer service skills.
  • Organised and able to manage a varied workload independently.
  • Comfortable working outdoors and engaging directly with residents.
  • Experienced in administration and data handling (Excel/Office systems).
  • Flexible, with the ability to work occasional evenings and weekends.
  • Experience within waste management, recycling, or community-based roles is desirable but not essential.
