V&A East Storehouse is a unique new museum experience opening up the V&A collection to everyone. Go behind-the-scenes to make new discoveries, explore untold stories and share ideas.
ABOUT THE ROLE
We are looking for a skilled interpretation specialist to join the V&A Interpretation team as Interpretation Producer for V&A East in Hackney Wick and Stratford. The role develops and delivers audience-centred interpretation schemes that are meaningful, relevant and inspiring for V&A East’s young-adult visitors aged 16–24.
The postholder will be responsible for delivering the final production of the interpretation scheme for V&A East Museum, due to open spring 2026, and ongoing snagging for Storehouse which opened in May 2025.
Once both sites are open, the role will craft interpretation for regular updates and new displays in the permanent galleries and annual temporary exhibitions at both sites, alongside managing the maintenance and upkeep of the existing schemes.
This producer is part of the central Interpretation team for the V&A and the role will develop with the needs of the V&A as it becomes a multi-site institution, with the opportunity for cross-site working and projects based at other London sites.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Act as Interpretation Producer for V&A East, liaising with curatorial, learning and design teams and working with audience stakeholders to develop and deliver innovative interpretation tailored to its context and audience of visitors aged 16–24, while aligning with and amplifying the museum’s interpretation strategy.
- Deliver the final interpretation scheme for East Museum (opening spring 2026) and snagging required at Storehouse (opened May 2025).
- Develop and produce inspiring and illuminating interpretation in response to research and audience engagement for ongoing updates to and rotations of displays at V&A East sites and temporary exhibitions held there. This includes but is not exclusive to narrative planning, devising interpretation plans, writing
briefs, inputting into the development of 3D and 2D designs, developing and commissioning AV, digital content and low- and high-tech interactives with internal and external teams. - Be responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of existing interpretation at V&A East sites, managing the related budget and liaising with the FoH Operations Team regarding consumables and loose parts management. Lead on commissioning and delivery of additional interpretation resource according to the needs of V&A East and the wider young people’s audience across other sites.
- Develop and deliver individual interpretation projects at other V&A sites (in London) as and when required.
- Advocate for, and work to, an ‘audience first’ approach, working with curatorial and learning colleagues to de-centre narratives and voices in our spaces by identifying and devising opportunities for research and engagement projects that realise co-working strands of interpretive outputs with V&A East audiences.
- Stand as audience advocate on project teams, working in collaboration with colleagues to ensure the V&A is creating gallery and display experiences of the best possible access and inclusion standards, responding to diverse and wide-ranging audience needs and actively contributing to developments that support the V&A’s strategy for widening access, inclusion and diversity.
- Promote equality, equity and diversity in all aspects of your work by developing and maintaining positive working relationships with other museum colleagues,
including those in Collections, Projects, Design, Exhibitions, Technical Services, IT, VE, Conservation, Digital and Marketing, ensuring colleagues are treated fairly and with respect and dignity. - As a member of the Interpretation team and the young people’s interpretation specialist, contribute to cross-site interpretation initiatives and the broader work of the team. Carry out ad hoc duties and tasks as requested by appropriate managers and keep up to date with developments in thinking in museum interpretation, ensuring you apply this to new ways of thinking at the V&A to maintain and further its reputation as a national and international leader in interpretation.
CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS
- Proven experience of museum or gallery interpretation and its development, with knowledge of how to work within multi-disciplinary teams to ensure its successful delivery, fit for purpose for defined audiences.
- An understanding of the access and diversity needs of a range of different audiences as they relate to museum displays, and how these are mapped onto the development of best-practice interpretation, with a particular understanding of how best to cater for visitors aged 16–24.
- Demonstrable experience and understanding of visitor research, participation and evaluation, and its place within the creation of audience-centred interpretation.
- A creative approach matched with practical design knowledge and judgement to form engaging, appropriate and effective storytelling within galleries.
- Excellent communication skills in a variety of media and contexts, and the ability to present to a range of audiences, with the ability to develop good working relationships and positively influence colleagues.
- Digital interpretation experience, including AV/interactive production and a knowledge of its potential role in innovating the interpretation of collections.
- Proven organisational skills with a keen eye for detail and the ability to take initiative and manage own time both effectively and flexibly to ensure that multiple projects are completed on time and on budget.
- Experience of using MS Office and other relevant IT systems to an intermediate/advanced level
- Shared values of Sustainability, Equity, Creativity, Collaboration and Generosity.
