ABOUT HACKNEY MUSEUM

Hackney Museum is the community history museum for the London Borough of Hackney. We work with local people to collect and share stories and objects about Hackney’s histories.

ABOUT THE ROLE

This museum trainee role is an exciting opportunity to help audiences engage with local history and the new permanent exhibition in new and exciting ways. The placement consists of 100 hours, or 14 days, spread over a period of 3–9 months, depending on the candidate’s availability.

This paid placement opportunity is part of a wider project called Reimagining Hackney Museum: Empowering Communities with Collections. This project is made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players, we have been able to transform Hackney Museum’s permanent exhibition sharing stories of migration and settlement from prehistory to modern day.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support Hackney Museum’s Bangladeshi Heritage Project, exploring the experiences and recent history (1960s–present) of Bangladeshi communities in Hackney.
  • Assist with research into the experiences and history of Bangladeshi communities in the borough.
  • Take part in engagement activities with Bangladeshi community groups and individuals.
Contribute to developing digital content, including blogs, based on the research and engagement activities.
  • Help develop Hackney Museum’s object collections to better represent the experiences of Bangladeshi communities in Hackney.

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS

  • A person aged 18-24 who lives, studies or works in the London Borough of Hackney.
  • Somebody who is interested in engaging with and sharing the stories of local communities in the London Borough of Hackney.
  • Familiarity with the Bangladeshi community in Hackney and neighbouring East London boroughs such as Tower Hamlets.
  • Basic IT skills.
  • Ability to speak or understand Sylheti would be helpful, but is not essential.
