ABOUT SHOREDITCH TOWN HALL

One of the grandest former civic buildings in London with a rich and varied history, Shoreditch Town Hall has established itself in the last decade as a leading cultural venue, live events space and community destination. Our landmark Grade II listed building houses spaces which range from an expansive and versatile 750 seat auditorium, The assembly Hall, to a flexible warren of spaces in our basement, The Ditch.

Shoreditch Town Hall’s core team is a tight knit, dedicated and multi-skilled group of 13 who are supported by around 50 casual staff and a loyal and highly skilled Board of Trustees. No day is ever the same at Shoreditch Town Hall, ensuring a vibrant and stimulating working environment that challenges and rewards in equal measure.

2025 promises to be an exciting year with several high profile events such as SXSW London, London Design Festival, and KIN’s Christmas Party season as well our world-class curated cultural programme including performances with Dance Umbrella, our annual Summer in the Ditch queer cabaret and lots more to be announced.

ABOUT THE ROLE

As a key member of Shoreditch Town Hall’s technical team, the Technician will support the delivery of all live events and productions, both artistic and commercial. This is a hands-on role that requires a collaborative and adaptable approach, strong technical knowledge across multiple disciplines (sound, lighting, AV, staging), and a commitment to high production values.

The Technician will work alongside visiting companies, artists, and external production teams to ensure seamless and safe event delivery. The role also involves the maintenance of technical equipment, supervision of casual staff when required, and the upholding of best practice in health and safety.

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Production & Technical Operations

  • Deliver high-quality technical support across all aspects of event and production delivery onstage and backstage.
  • Work collaboratively with visiting production teams, artists, and external technical personnel, offering expert technical assistance throughout their hire.
  • Maintain all front-of-house and backstage areas to professional and presentable standards at all times.
  • Operate as a skilled technician within your specialism (lighting, sound, AV, staging), while also supporting other technical disciplines as required.
  • Work as Duty Technician on rotation, acting as the primary technical point of contact during events, including radio coverage and shift-long availability.
  • Rig, programme, and operate technical systems (lighting, sound, AV), including working at height and performing manual handling tasks.
  • Participate in production meetings, rehearsals, get-ins, and get-outs, providing technical support as needed.
  • Ensure technical workspaces, storage, and performance areas are maintained in a safe, orderly, and functional condition.
  • Report faults, damages, or maintenance needs for technical equipment, ensuring repairs or replacements are actioned promptly.
  • Maintain awareness of industry innovations, standards, and best practices, and participate in training and development when required.
  • Supervise freelance and casual technical staff when assigned, ensuring tasks are completed to a high standard and in line with safety policies.

Health & Safety

  • Work in accordance with Shoreditch Town Hall’s Health & Safety policy, promoting a culture of safe practice at all times.
  • Support the Head of Production and Casual Production Manager and/or Casual Technical Manager in conducting routine inspections and compliance checks for technical equipment and backstage areas.
  • Undertake repairs, testing, and maintenance of technical systems in line with the venue’s rolling maintenance programme.
  • Report building-related or safety concerns promptly to the Venue & Facilities Assistant or Head of Operations.
  • Lead by example in upholding high standards of safety, cleanliness, and care throughout the venue’s technical operations.

General

  • Maintain exceptional standards of customer service for all users of the space, including artists, hirers, and visitors.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (CONTINUED)

  • Ensure all technical and production equipment – owned or hired – is handled responsibly and maintained in excellent condition.
  • Keep up to date with developments in lighting, sound, AV, and stage technologies.
  • Represent Shoreditch Town Hall in a professional and respectful manner at all times.
  • Work flexible and unsocial hours, including evenings, weekends, and public holidays, as required.
  • Uphold confidentiality and integrity in all areas of work.

Over time the emphasis of this job may change without altering the general character of the role or the level of duties and responsibilities entailed. This information will be periodically reviewed, revised and updated in consultation with the post-holder to reflect appropriate changes.

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS

Essential

  • Formal training or equivalent professional experience in technical theatre.
  • Proficiency in programming ETC Ion lighting desks and/or Yamaha QL1 sound consoles.
  • Demonstrated experience working directly with artists and production teams.
  • Confident and safe working at height.
  • Strong practical knowledge of theatre production, with a focus on either lighting, sound, AV, or staging.
  • Understanding of theatre electrics and safe electrical practices, including 3-phase power.
  • Familiarity with lighting control networks (e.g. Art-Net, sACN).
  • Good knowledge with QLab and Dante systems.
  • Good understanding of rigging and stage construction.
  • Solid knowledge of production workflows and backstage operations.
  • Clear and effective communicator with a flexible and adaptive approach.
  • Strong time management skills and the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • High sense of responsibility, reliability, and initiative.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to high production standards.
  • Confidence in working at height and managing equipment safely.
  • A desire to continue learning and developing professionally.
  • Passion for contemporary culture, including theatre, dance, music, or comedy.

Desirable

  • Experience using Artifax or other event scheduling systems.
  • First Aid and/or Fire Marshal and/or Manual Handling Trainings.
  • Technical accreditations:.
  • IPAF 3A (Mobile Elevated Work Platforms).
  • PASMA (Mobile Tower Scaffolds).
  • BS7909 (Temporary Electrical Systems).
  • Experience working in flexible, multi-purpose venues.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and ground plans.
  • Ability to read lighting plots and/or music scores.
