ABOUT MUSEUM OF THE HOME

We are the only museum in the world dedicated to exploring the idea of home—not just as a physical space, but as something shaped by emotions, identity, society, politics, and the environment.

We see Museum of the Home as a movement, championing home as a lens through which to understand major global issues and explore possible solutions.

We are now looking for a new member of our Visitor Experience Department working Saturdays, 9.30 am to 5.30 pm (7 hours per week).

We are also looking for two new members of our Visitor Experience Department working Tuesdays and Sundays, 9.30 am to 5.30 pm (14 hours per week).

Working as part of a busy team to delivery an outstanding experience for every visitor whilst maintaining a safe and secure environment, you will provide a warm welcome and support the Museum’s fundraising and commercial activity through the promotion of donations, the sale of products and event tickets.

ABOUT THE ROLE

To work as part of a team to deliver an outstanding experience for every visitor at the Museum of the Home. You will provide every visitor with a welcome, using conversation to help visitors understand what makes the subject of ‘Home’ so special.

To support the Museum’s fundraising and commercial activity through the promotion of donations, the sale of products in the Museum shop and event tickets.

To maintain a safe and secure environment for our visitors, collections, staff and volunteers.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Maintain a safe and secure environment

  • Invigilate and patrol galleries, visitor spaces and collection objects.
  • Report and escalate accidents, safeguarding and security incidents as they arise.
  • Assist in the evacuation of all public spaces during emergencies.
  • Manage the flow of visitors between gallery spaces.
  • Keeping up to date and attending to health and safety training as required for the role.

Work as part of a team to deliver an outstanding experience for every visitor

  • Welcome visitors to the Museum and help them get the most out of their visit by providing information and support throughout their visit.
  • Communicate with colleagues to ensure the smooth daily operation of public spaces.
  • Encourage visitor feedback and support the wider improvement of visitor satisfaction.
  • Attend training throughout the year, including department training on Mondays.
  • Provide guided interactions and visitor engagement through, for example, object handling and other relevant visitor interactions.

Support the Museum’s fundraising and commercial activities

  • Proactively ask visitors to make donations to support the work of the Museum.
  • Operate the till and ticketing system; sell event tickets.
  • Encourage visitor engagement with our shop, events and venue hire spaces.
  • Support the running of commercial events and private hires.
  • Occasionally provide Retail cover.

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS

  • Providing excellent service to visitors / audiences in a busy environment (essential).
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences, verbally and through listening (essential).
  • Ability to work well independently and with others (essential).
  • Strong attention to detail (essential).
  • Able to use initiative to respond to unexpected challenges (essential).
  • Interest in the subject of Home (essential).
  • Making a proactive contribution to Museum fundraising targets (essential).
  • Must be able to pass a DBS check (essential).
  • Operating a till or using a ticketing system (desirable).
  • Engaging conversationally with groups of people (desirable).
  • A passion for making our stories and collections accessible to all (desirable).
  • An interest in working in the cultural sector (desirable)
  • Basic administrative and IT skills (Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel)(desirable).
  • Sales skills (desirable).

Hours: This role requires weekend, Bank Holiday and evening working according to the shift pattern allocated.

Tuesday 9.30 – 17.30 and Sunday 9.30 – 17.30 (14 hours per week)

Saturday 9.30 – 17.30 (7 hours per week).

Interviews: Interviews will be held in person at the Museum on 21st and 22nd July 2026.
